Cat sterilization in Montpellier
Sterilization is a tool for combating and preventing abandonment and attacks on animal welfare. Cats are domestic animals: they cannot be left to fend for themselves without risk to their health and the community. In 4 years, a pair of cats can give birth to over 20,000 kittens.
The benefits of sterilization:
- Avoid the "surprise litter" effect, an all-too-frequent source of abandonment,
- In females, the absence of sterilization increases the risk of mammary tumors,
- A better relationship between cat and family: an unsterilized cat has a greater tendency to mark and meow loudly,
- An unsterilized cat hunts more and is more exposed to accidents.
Stray cats, once sterilized, perform a sanitary function: they protect their territory by preventing other animals such as rats and mice from settling in. A controlled cat population is better accepted by the neighborhood. This sterilization policy is recognized by the WHO.
How do you sterilize stray cats?
- The City of Montpellier catches stray cats with its Brigade Capture et Incivilités (the only one authorized to do so). The Brigade is responsible for capturing stray domestic animals, combating animal nuisance and animal abuse.
- With the help of feline protection associations, these cats are sterilized, identified, cared for and released.
