Also known as the Ecusson, the Centre district is the city's oldest. With its cobbled streets and ancient buildings, it tells the story of Montpellier since the Middle Ages. Place de la Comédie is one of the most famous landmarks. Here you'll find the Opera House, the statue of the Three Graces and numerous cafés where you can bask in the sun.
In its narrow streets are confidential little squares, craft stores and antique bookshops. The Promenade du Peyrou, with its Arc de Triomphe and statue of Louis XIV, offers magnificent views of Montpellier and the surrounding area. The Musée Fabre, one of the finest museums in the south of France, features works by great artists such as Rubens, Courbet and Soulages.
