Civil status and identities

The Civil Status Department is in daily contact with the people of Montpellier. Its missions cover all events in the course of a lifetime: births, marriages and PACS, changes of name or surname, deaths... Civil registrars, who must constantly adapt to changes in society and the law, create and update official records in paper registers, veritable memories of the city. They also issue extracts from these records.

The particularity of this service: civil registrars have the power to create legal acts (establishing legal existence, filiation, marriage...). Their mission therefore has a strong impact on the lives of citizens.

Montpellier is a dynamic city: every year, its registrars process more than 9,000 births, 1,000 marriages, 1,000 Pacs, 62,000 requests for certificates, 4,000 deaths...
