National Identity Card (CNI) / Passport application form

The Carte Nationale d'Identité (CNI) and passport provide proof of identity and French nationality. What's more, the biometric passport is an essential document for travel to any country in the world. It is not compulsory to have these documents, but in certain cases (police checks, entry to official buildings...) they are necessary to prove your identity.

The Carte Nationale d'Identité is valid for 15 years, compared with 10 years for the Passport. In case of urgent need or scheduled travel, it is strongly recommended to anticipate the renewal process several months in advance.

Online pre-application

To save time and simplify the process, you can fill in a pre-application form online. Simply print it out and hand it in at the counter when you submit your application. Pre-application is not compulsory.

Without pre-application, the procedure takes place in 4 steps:

1-Constituting the file

A file requires the submission of several documents: standard photos, proof of identity, proof of residence... It is not necessary to provide a birth certificate: it will be attached to the file when it is submitted.

It is necessary to provide your document in order to renew it. In the event of loss or theft, a declaration form must be added to the file, together with supporting documents for the theft. This formality can also be carried out when the application is submitted.

For information, applying for and renewing a Carte nationale d'identité is free of charge. One exception: in the event of loss, a €25 tax stamp will be required. Passports, on the other hand, require a €86 tax stamp.

Photograph standards

It is compulsory to provide identity photographs that meet the standards. It is not possible to take them at the town hall. It is advisable to go to a professional or use a booth using a system approved by the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas.

2-Scheduling an appointment

File submission takes place during an appointment at l'Hôtel de Ville or in local town halls.

1,400 slots are offered every week. Priority is given to online access. Appointments can also be made by telephone.

At any time, you can change or cancel the appointment on the dedicated website. Simply enter the code you received online or by phone.

3-Filing, checking and processing the application

The applicant must be present when the application is submitted.

In the town hall, terminals allow you to confirm your presence by entering the telephone number given when booking your appointment.

At the counter, the agent will check that the file is complete. It will then be processed by the municipal services and sent to the prefecture for validation. Finally, the document will be produced by the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS).

In some cases, you may be contacted to provide additional documents or carry out additional formalities.

4-Retract title

Once the availability of the title has been confirmed, collection takes place without an appointment at the place where the application was submitted.

Please note: minors over the age of 12 must be present to collect their ticket.

In accordance with the French Data Protection Act of January 6, 1978, you have the right to access and rectify any information concerning you. If you wish to exercise this right, please contact the Direction de la Communication, Pôle multimédia, Hôtel de Ville, 1 place Georges Frêche 34267 Montpellier Cedex 2.
