Cell phone antennas

The City and Metropolis of Montpellier are attentive to the health and environmental issues linked to mobile telephony, particularly concerning relay antennas. These antennas enable voice and data communications (telephony, Internet, etc.) to be received and transmitted.

Each operator has its own network of relay antennas. A relay antenna covers a specific geographical area.

As the number of users and data rates increase, operators have to "densify" their networks, so new antennas have to be installed.

The role of the city

Regulation of the siting of relay antennas is a matter for special administrative police entrusted to the State, which alone decides on the modalities for siting relay antennas and measures to protect the public from electromagnetic waves (Conseil d'Etat ruling of October 26, 2011 suspending the Bordeaux mayor's February 12, 2010 order).

Communes and their mayor have only limited power. If town planning rules are respected, the City cannot oppose this implantation. The City remains attentive to all antenna siting projects on its territory, and thus wishes to work with the 4 mobile operators (Bouygues, Free, SFR and Orange) to discuss their siting projects.

The City may also carry out wave exposure measurements in public places, to ensure compliance with regulatory thresholds.

Information on relay antenna projects

In accordance with current regulations, for each project to install or modify a relay antenna, the cell phone operator sends an information file to the town hall specifying the nature of the work and the planned installations.
