Request for a civil status document

The civil status record legally establishes the identity and administrative status of each citizen in the eyes of the State. Drawn up and updated by a civil registrar, this authentic record with probative value (recognized by the courts) is kept indefinitely within the commune's registers. The records cover three stages of life: births, marriages and deaths.

Various administrative formalities require the production of a copy of a deed: the application for a national identity card, a passport, the constitution of a marriage file, of Pacte Civil de Solidarité (PACS), adoption, obtaining French nationality, the creation of a notarial deed....

On this page, any Montpellier resident can request a copy of a document concerning him or her.
Three possibilities are offered by law:

• The integral copy, conforming to the communal register;
• The extract with filiation, which summarizes the information and mentions the ascendants (parents);
• The extract without filiation, which summarizes the information without mentioning the ascendants (parents);
• The plurilingual extract, often requested by foreign authorities.

Requests concerning other people are regulated by law:

• The extract without filiation may be requested by any person, without justification;
• The extract with filiation and the full copy of the act may only be requested by the legal representative, the spouse or partner in a Civil Solidarity Pact (PACS), the person's ascendant or descendant, or certain authorized professionals.

Deeds less than 100 years old are issued free of charge, and sent by post to the applicant's address. By law, certificates can only be sent by e-mail. To facilitate formalities with foreign countries, it is possible to request a multilingual document.

As a reminder, this online service only concerns people born, married or deceased in Montpellier.

The information and supporting documents collected are processed for the purpose of providing the services requested. They are protected and will be kept for the legal duration and that of their usefulness. The recipients are the departments of the City and Metropolis of Montpellier delivering these services.

• The registers prior to 1905, and the birth certificates from 1905 to 1921 can be consulted online.
• For civil status events occurring to French nationals abroad, in Algeria before 1963 and in former overseas or trust territories that have become independent, as well as for people who have acquired French nationality, requests for records should be made to the central civil status department:

For a certificate request from abroad, you must send us the information to the following email address: actes-exter@montpellier.fr

For birth and death certificates:

• First name and surname
• Date and place of birth
• The relationship between the applicant and the person to whom the certificate relates
• Name(s) and first name(s) of the parents
• Photocopy of the applicant's identity card
• Postal address for sending the certificate

For requests for marriage certificates :

• Last name(s) and first name(s) of the spouses.
• Date(s) and place(s) of birth of the spouses
• Filiations(s) of the spouses
• Photocopy of the applicant's identity card
• Complete postal address for receipt of the act with mention of the country of receipt

An incomplete application will not be processed.

The only recipient of the information collected is the Montpellier Town Hall Civil Status Department, and it is processed electronically to help us deal with your request.

In accordance with the French Data Protection Act of January 6, 1978, you have the right to access and rectify any information concerning you. In application of article 441-7 of the French Penal Code, the following is punishable by one year's imprisonment and a €15,000 fine:

• Drawing up an attestation or certificate stating materially inaccurate facts,
• Falsifying an originally sincere attestation or certificate,
• Using an inaccurate or falsified attestation or certificate.

COMEDEC (Communication Électronique des Données de l'Etat Civil) enables dematerialized exchanges between authorized professionals (administrations, lawyers, notaries) and the civil registry services.

The City of Montpellier has been connected to the COMEDEC system since November 1, 2018 for exchanges with the Prefectures, and since April 1, 2019 for exchanges of documents with other French communes.
