LIFE ReWa project

The RecycledWater for LIFE (LIFE ReWa) 2021-2026 project addresses the question of how to limit natural freshwater withdrawals through the use of multi-purpose recycled water.
Temps de lecture : 2 minutes

What's in it for the Metropolis?

  • Manage water resources as effectively as possible and offset the deficit linked to the growing need for fresh water throughout the territory.
  • Reduce the volumes of treated wastewater discharged and the associated pollution without compromising the maintenance of the ecological functions of watercourses.

What's the objective?

Create and make available a new resource: recycled water produced from treated wastewater of suitable qualities to meet a variety of uses (agricultural, industrial and urban), by demonstrating the technical feasibility, social acceptability, availability of uses and economic sustainability of reusing the region's wastewater.

What resources?

  • Build a "mobile container" production unit for recycled water from wastewater leaving treatment plants, to make it compatible with the various targeted uses.
  • Store the recycled water to make it available to users.

What progress has been made?

  • April 2024: construction of the Mobile Production Unit completed
  • June 2024: ANSES opinion obtained
  • December 2024: prefectoral authorization order obtained
.

Which partners?

  • Régie des eaux de Montpellier: project leader
  • Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole: associate beneficiary
  • European Membrane Institute: research laboratory specializing in modeling membrane transfer phenomena and monitoring the fate of organic micropollutants during treatment
  • DV2E: consultancy specializing in treated wastewater reuse projects
.

What kind of financing?

The LIFE ReWa project (September 2021 - September 2026) is nearly 55% funded by the European Union and around 25% by the Occitanie region for a total of 1.8 million euros.

What kind of communication?

Because it deals with so-called wastewater, dirty water that we no longer want to see or smell, wastewater treatment is taken for granted, and its mission invisible. Yet it is essential to the quality of our daily lives and the preservation of our environment...
