Towards a greener, more livable city

Montpellier is committed to an ambitious approach to greening its urban space and preserving biodiversity. Several actions are underway or planned:
- Greening the heart of the city : Montpellier's emblematic squares such as the Comédie, the esplanade Charles de Gaulle, the place Max Rouquette and the place des Martyrs de la Résistance, are or will be greened and pedestrianized to adapt to climate change and become more breathable in summer.
- Creation of agriparks: vast agricultural spaces and biodiversity wells will be developed at the gateways to the city to offer places for leisure and relaxation in the heart of nature. 2 examples: the Mas Nouguier agriparc (a former winegrowing estate) and the Bouisses agriparc (over 100 hectares of sanctuary).
- Lutte contre l'artificialisation des sols: the Metropole has set itself the goal of having 100% open land in all new projects by 2030 in order to preserve biodiversity and combat the effects of climate disruption.
- Revegetation of school playgrounds: 30 school playgrounds will be revegetated and desoiled by 2026. These "adventure courtyards" will become islands of coolness encouraging collective play, reconnecting children with nature and enabling a more balanced occupation of space. 13 schoolyards have already benefited from these developments.
These actions make Montpellier an exemplary city in terms of sustainable development and quality of life. They contribute to improving the well-being of residents and preserving the environment for future generations.
