Carpool with BlaBlaCar Daily

Since March 1, 2021, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole has been funding a daily car-sharing service throughout its 31 communes.

After acting as ambassador for a national program subsidized by the Certificats d'Economies d'Energie for employees of major employers, the Métropole has been extending the scheme to the general public since January 1, 2022.

At stake, free rides for passengers and a financial reward for drivers (up to €150/month).

How does it work?

The Metropole subsidizes all journeys made on the BlaBlaCar Daily app originating or terminating in one of the 31 communes in the territory:

  • Passengers travel for free
  • Drivers are paid between €1 and €2 for each passenger transported: up to €150/month saved!

To benefit:

  • Download the free BlaBlaCar Daily app, which connects passengers and drivers:
  • Complete your preferences: fill in your profile and save your journeys in advance or at the last minute.
  • Find your passengers: carpoolers send you requests, and you're just one click away from accepting them.
  • Find your carpooler at the specified location.

Passengers also benefit from MAIF's "return" guarantee, allowing passengers to return home with a €50 refund on their advance expenses.

To travel in compliance with safety rules: 3 passengers maximum per carpool: one seated in the front and 2 seated in the back.

This subsidy applies automatically when using the BlaBlaCar Daily application. For the driver, it's the Metropole that funds the journey, and for the passenger it translates into a free ride.

Routes are free of charge for passengers as long as the arrival or departure point is within the Montpellier metropolitan area.

The Metropole has decided to continue subsidizing trips until December 31, 2025.

The driver is paid a flat rate of 1€ for each passenger transported and for any journey between 5 and 10 kms.

Beyond that, he is paid 10 cents per kilometer, between 10 and 20 kms, i.e. a maximum of 2€ per journey and per passenger.

For example, if you have 2 passengers over a distance of 30 kms, you earn 4€ per journey.

3 main benefits:

  • Economic: with BlaBlaCar Daily, whether I'm a driver or a passenger, I save money.
  • Environmental: more carpooling means fewer cars on the road, less traffic jams and, therefore, fewer greenhouse gas emissions. With BlaBlaCar Daily, I'm helping to fight global warming and preserve the planet.
  • Social: with BlaBlaCar Daily, I share my commute time, I also meet new people and my commute time seems shorter.

The app features messaging where we invite you to chat directly with your carpoolers to make sure they're on their way. As a passenger, the app allows you to view your driver's arrival.

If the driver does not show up:

  • For your outbound trip, we invite you to find another transportation solution (you can anticipate this eventuality thanks to the feature that allows you to see your driver's trip),
  • For your return trip, we invite you to contact BlaBlaCar Daily customer support who will be able to repatriate you thanks to the "Return Home" guarantee (free for you).

The conditions of the driver's insurance apply.

The driver has taken out insurance for his car that covers passengers.

Income from carpooling is not taxable and does not need to be declared as long as it complies with the principles of co-consumption and cost-sharing, but must be deducted from business expenses.

When you carpool by transporting passengers for income and you meet the following 3 conditions, the sums received do not need to be declared to the administration, as this is a simple sharing of expenses:

  • You make a trip on your own behalf,
  • The price of your trip does not exceed the kilometric scale and is divided by the number of passengers,
  • You (also) pay a share of the price of fuel and tolls occasioned by this trip.
