Early childhood social shield

Montpellier is home to almost 40% of single-parent families, 85% of whom are women raising one or more children on their own, and wishes to provide them with the best possible support.

The city is therefore setting up an innovative scheme to meet the need for atypical childcare hours (before 7:30 am and after 6:30 pm) for the 0-3 year old children of these Montpellier families.

What is the Early Childhood Social Shield?

The schedules of community daycare centers or parental daycare centers, associations and private can't always meet the needs of some single parents. Finding a solution at an affordable rate to come and/or bring their child to the crèche and/or look after them at home while the parent is working can be difficult.

This is why the city of Montpellier is offering financial assistance to single-parent families for their childcare costs for children under 3 years old working "atypical" hours.

Who is the Social Shield intended for?

This scheme is aimed at single parents with at least one child under 3 years of age who live in the commune of Montpellier and work atypical hours (training or employment).

The criteria to be met to benefit from the scheme:

  • Request childcare for a child under 3,
  • Be in a position of employment or training justifying hours outside the opening hours of conventional childcare facilities (7:30am-6:30pm),
  • Have a family quotient less than or equal to €1,200,
NB: Family quotient = Net taxable income / number of tax units. Calculate the amount of your family quotient on the Caf website
  • Be eligible for the "Cmg Structure" childcare supplement paid by the CAF and not already be a beneficiary of the "Cmg Emploi direct" scheme (e.g. care provided by an independent childminder),
  • Use a home-based childcare organization affiliated with the City of Montpellier's "Bouclier social Petite Enfance" scheme (see below)

Which days and times are affected?

Help can be paid for reception from Monday to Saturday, from 5am to 7:30am and/or from 6:30pm to midnight. Sundays are not included in this scheme.

Why choose this system?

  • It is specially designed to meet the needs of single-parent families in Montpellier, by offering childcare adapted to staggered working hours.
  • It considerably reduces the cost of home childcare thanks to direct financial assistance from the City. The cost will be the same as in a conventional crèche.
  • It simplifies administrative management: no fees to be advanced thanks to a third-party payment system.

How does it work?

  1. I contact a home-based childcare organization located in the Montpellier commune and affiliated to the scheme
  2. I request a quote based on my needs in hours of childcare per month
  3. I submit my file to the Ville (Pôle Petite Enfance) with the quote and necessary documents by email: creche@montpellier.fr or by post:

    Pôle Petite Enfance
    Ville de Montpellier
    1, place Georges Frêche
    34267 Montpellier Cedex 2
  4. The City evaluates my request and calculates the financial aid, taking into account my income.
  5. Once the application has been approved and the childcare provided, the aid is paid directly to the childcare organization, so that I don't have to pay any fees in advance.
