Objectives
Adapting the traffic plan to soothe the heart of the district
In summer 2022, the Rabelais and Orient boulevards were made two-way to:
- reduce traffic on Place Carnot and Boulevard de Strasbourg and thus enable their enhancement and beautification;
- make the inter-district boulevards' automobile route more legible to the south of the city center.
This adaptation, which has been awaited for several years, will be implemented in phase with the developments on Avenue Clemenceau as part of the Tramway Line 5. This development will be an opportunity to respond to the needs and safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
Rethinking the city at children's level
The creation of streets for schoolchildren is a priority to improve air quality, enabling children to walk or cycle to school in complete safety.
A temporary scheme has been set up around schools in the Carnot district. An overall plan is currently being studied to pedestrianize and plant part of the streets between the train station and Place Carnot.
Improving Rue de la Méditerranée and Place François Jaumes
Away from through traffic, the Mediterranean district already benefits from a relatively calm operation. However, there are still improvements to be made to moderate speeds on rue de la Méditerranée and make public spaces more comfortable and more accessible to people with reduced mobility around place Jaumes.
Making place de Strasbourg more convivial
Today, this square is more a crossroads than a square. Tomorrow, in connection with the redevelopment of the Pont de Sète, and the improvement of pedestrian spaces it could be enhanced to make it a convivial space.
Ensure cycle continuity on rue Frédéric Peyson
Another two-way cycle continuity is to be created between boulevard de la Perruque and boulevard de Strasbourg in connection with the cycle ring. The challenge will be to ensure that bicycles and cars cohabit as well as possible.
Give the Place Carnot its lustre
Today left to asphalt and cars, the Place Carnot, deserves to be rethought to give it back its lustre and make it a real public space at the heart of the district. An active, friendly and tree-lined square. A place to live in.
Hosting the bike ring on boulevard de Strasbourg
A priority project, the bike ring should ensure cycling continuity to the south of the city center, between Gambetta and Antigone. Linked to the embellishment of Place Carnot, its insertion on Boulevard de Strasbourg is an opportunity to rethink facilities for the benefit of local life.
Optimizing the parking offer
Giving more space to pedestrians, terraces, bicycles and greenery means reclaiming space from cars. Thus, the supply of on-street parking will need to be optimized, particularly around Place Carnot.
Improving pedestrian comfort on Rue Frédéric Bazille
The street's narrow sidewalks make it uncomfortable for pedestrians, and sometimes inaccessible to people with reduced mobility.
