This perimeter has been deemed essential for protection and enhancement with special urban planning rules, grouped together in a document that takes the place of a local urban plan: the plan de sauvegarde et de mise en valeur (PSMV) de Montpellier.
The perimeter of the remarkable heritage site subject to the provisions of the PSMV encompasses an area of 96 hectares and includes 2,182 plots containing over 2,500 buildings. It includes the Place Royale du Peyrou and its surroundings, the faubourg from Rue de Maguelone to the train station, and the site of the former Hôpital Général and Cliniques Saint-Charles.
Within the perimeter subject to the provisions of the PSMV, all work, whether exterior or interior, requires prior authorization if the building is identified as requiring conservation.
These prior authorizations are subject to the approval of the Bâtiments de France (ABF) architect, who studies the projects from a heritage point of view and ensures compliance with the PSMV.
In order to assist project developers with their projects located in remarkable heritage sites, information documents and technical sheets have been drawn up.
